2007 Par 3 Experience:
EWGAMD hosted its 3rd Annual Fund Raiser
for Make-A-Wish Foundation on
Sunday, June 3, 2007 at the challenging Strategic Fox Golf Course. This
fund raiser has given EWGA Metro Detroit a foothold on teaming up again
with some repeat supporters such as Hines Lincoln Mercury, Townsend Hotel,
Crystal Mountain, Garland and Tree Tops Resorts & TPC of Dearborn, to name
a few. Some newcomers included Golf-Tec (EWGA Corporate Sponsor), Oak
Pointe Country Club, Flying Fish Tavern (Matt Prentice Restaurant Group),
The Tennis & Golf Company, and a few private donors to help support the
cause. The day started off somewhat iffy due to the threat of rain,
however, it held off and all were able to play without getting wet.
This year’s event proved to be better
than 2006. More participants, more media exposure, and more money raised
for a great cause. Thanks too to Terri Taylor (Beacon Hill) who was
instrumental in assisting in the effort to solicit donors. Our goal is
clearly to make a positive impression on our community that we do more
than just play golf. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has become a soft spot for
EWGA Metro Detroit as it serves such a huge cause. The goal that has been
set by the board and sponsorship committee is to increase the amount
raised than previous years, and so far, we’ve matched our forecast.
Without the help of the vendors and the participants, we could not do
this.
A supportive and repeat participant,
Debbie Bishop, (Fieldstone), always brings along a foursome to play in the
event. This year, her team consisted of (from left to right) Mark
Schmanski, Debbie, new member, Sue Gulewicz (Fieldstone),and her partner,
Kevin Bidlack.
Also, some other photogenic notables,
Bonnie Beutler, who professed that she had a great time with Events Chair
Board member, Sue Hickey (Shenandoah) and Judy Dunn (Shenandoah) and long
time members, Barb Rupas (Sylvan Glen), Joan Cleland (Greystone), League
Chair, Sandra Weber (Fieldstone) and Sponsorship Chair, Sarah Sparling,
(Sylvan Glen).
The day ended with a presentation by
our President, Susan Peters (Shenandoah) to Make- A-Wish Foundation.
We do hope the word gets out on what
an exciting and fun event this has become! All golfers and skill levels
are welcome. It’s all for a good cause. Make sure you get it on your
calendar for 2008. The date will be posted on our web soon.

September 26th,
2004, the last beautiful day of the golf season,
EWGA Metro Detroit and the PFUND (The Program for
Understanding Neurological Disease) once again teamed up
to host the 3rd Annual EWGA
charity golf outing to support ALS and Diabetes research.
The outing was held at the Salem Hills Golf Club in
Northville. Golf was followed by dinner and a silent
auction. As a token of appreciation for attending
and supporting the cause, each participant received a door
prize. The event proved
to be a great success, raising a total of $2400,
which is double the amount from last year, all in support
of research conducted by the PFUND,
Dr Eva Feldman M.D., Ph.D.,
Director. The Program
for Understanding Neurological Disease (PFUND) is a group
of scientists, clinicians, and students at the University
of Michigan working toward the common aim of understanding
and curing neurological disease,

The EWGA and PFUND
are grateful to the event sponsors from
Ford, Lincoln Mercury, and
Pepsi Bottling Group.
Thank you to our
contributing Sponsors: Hiller Markets, Outback Restaurant
(Clarkston), Salem Hills, Pheasant Run, Sycamore Hills,

The Metro Detroit Chapter hosted
this years’ Great Lakes Sectional Event and offered non-competitive
play for those members who wanted to come and support
their chapter champions, therefore, the 1st Annual Great Lakes
Sectional Open was born! We offered a Friday night welcome reception
and Saturday night casino night for the women to get re-acquainted or
make new friends in a casual atmosphere. We would like to thank our
Event sponsors, Islands of the Bahamas and Crystal Mountain, for
helping offset the costs of these fun activities.
Saturday’s sectional championship started off
with a 45 minute frost delay but it felt warm once we were out playing
golf due to the adrenaline running through the competitors’ veins. The
competition was followed by a dinner and awards presentation.
Congratulations to our
Detroit Metro members who placed at the Sectional, Shelly
Weiss, 2nd place low net in the championship flight, Karen Braniecki
Naida, 2nd place low net in first flight, and Janet Conlon, 2nd place
low net in second flight.
Shelly Weiss went on to represent the Great Lakes
International Section at the National Championship, Nashville, TN,
September 10 & 11, 2004. |

The graceful silver
lady stands balanced at the top of her swing.
High above the bookshelves supported on a wooden base, she
stands for victory!
Victory for the Metro
Detroit EWGA chapter vs. Greater Toronto Area chapter.
For the second year in a row over the 5 years of playing
the annual Border Cup event, and in spite of last minute
team member changes, the Detroit team won the
"graceful lady".
The event, a friendly rivalry between our 2 chapters and
countries, is a spin-off from the Ryder Cup where 2-women
scramble format (adjusted for handicaps) teams (40 people
total) tee it up against each other.
Greater Toronto
hosted the event this year at the beautiful Carlisle
Country Club in Carlisle, Canada.
The day was filled with great weather, a challenging golf
course in excellent condition, and the friendly
volunteer EWGA
members taking care of the details.
A hallmark of EWGA, this event enables the camaraderie and
growing friendships to continue, which make it a
great women's golf
organization.
See you next year
in Detroit! (and by
the way, we plan for the "lady" to stay in her Detroit
home!)

Pinehurst was the host to this year's Annual Conference.
What a fabulous resort with 8 challenging golf courses to test all your skills. I have attended many National Conferences over the years but this one will be
the most memorable for me.
I had the honor and pleasure of playing 18 holes of Golf on
Pinehurst #1 with Suzy Whaley!
Our sponsor, Mass Mutual, brought Suzy to the conference to be the guest speaker at the leadership luncheon on Thursday afternoon. She was a dynamic speaker and told us the story of how she made her decision to play in the
Greater Hartford Open on the PGA Tour.
Also, in our foursome was a Representative from Mass Mutual,
Sue Tougas, and Beth Sachs,
VP of the Long Island Chapter. The weather was perfect and the company was great on the links at Pinehurst on Friday that made for an experience that I will never forget.
The conference is a time to make new friends, get re-acquainted with old friends and enjoy the game that we all love so much!
Next year's conference is scheduled for
Oct 28-30 at Barton Creek Resort, Austin, Texas.

Checklist: gloves, ear muffs, turtleneck, long johns, tees, balls, clubs? golf clubs?
- Yes, that's right, golf clubs . On a cool Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 morning,
Sandy Weber, Lena Willis, Sue Karas, and I
teed it up with
LPGA Teaching Professionals
during the Pro-Am event for the regional LPGA Teaching Professionals tournament at Timber Ridge Golf Club in East Lansing, MI.
As the frost melted, we had a chance to get to know our pro, Lisa Grimes, from Minnesota.
Our team played and came in
first in the best ball competition.
We had a great time. The course was decorated for Halloween. Hole by hole competitions included
closest to the scarecrow, the graveyard headstones were immovable objects,
and the lucky player to last be in a bunker received the
"sand witch" (a laughing witch head on a string).
After a fun round of golf and a hearty meal on, what turned out to be, a pleasant fall day, all four of us "packed" ourselves back into my Intrigue for the trek back home.
It's always a great learning experience to play with golf professionals on a golf course.
You can learn so much. You can witness first hand how they
manage a golf course,
what
targets they shoot for,
which
clubs they choose,
but most of all, what do they do when they get into
tree trouble.
Yes, it happens to them like it happens to us (amateurs).
They stay calm, stick with it & never give up.
